Asbestos Removal
A Guide to the Neutralization of Asbestos Products
Completely removing asbestos is common in pipe wrapping and insulation in heating pipes. Once the asbestos is removed, it no longer poses a health threat and future maintenance or monitoring is not needed. Unfortunately, this method is very expensive.
If you choose to completely remove the asbestos, ensure that it is done correctly. When hiring an asbestos professional, confirm that he or she is licensed to remove asbestos. In addition, study the professional's references and safety record. Make sure your contract states that the asbestos abatement will be done according to federal and state laws and OSHA regulations.
The asbestos contractor should isolate the area where the removal is being done. He or she should utilize plastic sheets, self-contained showers and protective suits. The removed asbestos should be placed in plastic and disposed of according to local regulations.
You should also hire a firm to conduct air-monitoring tests during the asbestos removal. This firm should be separate from the asbestos contractor. Air-monitoring tests can determine whether the presence of asbestos fibers in the air has increased.
It is very important to never attempt to remove asbestos by yourself. When the material is disturbed, it becomes very hazardous to your health. It is more harmful to incorrectly remove the material than leave it alone.
